Ordering number to 1000
To order numbers it first helps to understand Place Value. More on Place Value can be found on the Year 2 page.
Write down a few random numbers on a piece of paper and see if your child can place them in order.
Rounding is when you take a number and ‘bump it up’ or ‘bump it down’ to a nearby number. Numbers can be rounded to any place value you want. At this stage we need to be familiar with rounding to the nearest 10 or 100.
Here we are rounding to the nearest 10.
If the unit digit is 5 or more we round up.
If the unit digit is 4 or less we round down.
56 would be rounded up to 60.
42 would be rounded down to 40.
Rounding to the nearest 100.
If the tens digit is 50 or more we round up.
If the tens digit is 40 or less we round down.
169 would be rounded up to 200.
637 would be rounded down to 600.
