Multiplying by the grid method
To work out 45 x 5 break the 2-digit number up and multiply by them by the other number.
40 x 5 = 200
2 x 5 = 10
Add the answers together.
200 + 10 = 210
So
42 x 5 = 210
If you have a bigger numbers split them into a table to work out the answer. Try 52 x 13.
x | 50 | 2 |
10 | 500 | 20 |
3 | 150 | 6 |
Now add the columns together
x | 50 | 2 |
10 | 500 | 20 |
3 | 150 | 6 |
650 | 26 |
Now add up the two number in red.
650 + 26 = 676
So
52 x 13 = 676
