What is a world religion?
A religion is a set of beliefs and practices that help people understand the world and guide them on how to live good lives. Religion often answers big questions like “Why are we here?” and “What happens after we die?”
There are many religions around the world, but the six main world religions are:
Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism.
Each religion has its own beliefs, traditions, holy books, special places of worship, and festivals. Followers may pray, sing, meditate, or take part in ceremonies to show their faith and feel closer to what they believe in.
What is the oldest religion?
Hinduism is known as the oldest major religion in the world. It began thousands of years ago in ancient India and is still followed by millions today.
The five oldest religions are:
These religions have shaped much of human history and continue to influence how people live, celebrate, and treat one another.
Do all religions have a God?
Not all religions believe in the same idea of God:
- Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism each believe in one God who created and cares for the world.
- Hinduism believes in many gods and goddesses, each representing different parts of life and nature.
- Buddhism does not worship gods. Instead, Buddhists follow the teachings of the Buddha, who showed a path to wisdom, peace, and freedom from suffering.
Even though beliefs are different, all religions teach people to be kind, honest, and caring toward others.
What is Humanism?
Humanism is not a religion but a way of thinking about life.
Humanists do not believe in any gods or an afterlife. Instead, they believe we have one life and should make the most of it by being happy, kind, and helping others.
Humanists believe that people can live good and moral lives through reason, science, and empathy — without following a religion.
Instead of worship, Humanists often hold talks, celebrations, and community events. They also have non-religious weddings, baby namings, and funerals, focusing on people’s lives and achievements.
