Multiplication facts
Multiplication is a reverse of division. This means by rearranging the numbers around in the right way from a multiplication sum you can make a correct division sum.
3 x 4 = 12
If we move the three to the other side of the equals sign and add a ÷ sign we have:
4 = 12 ÷ 3
It works by moving the 4 instead.
3 = 12 ÷ 4
More Multiplication facts
Use these multiplication facts to help you work out other multiplication questions. If you know that 4 x 5 = 20
Then 4 x 6 is 4 more = 24
If you know that 2 x 4 = 8
Then 4 x 4 is double 8 = 16
If you know that 10 x 3 = 30
Then 9 x 3 is 3 less = 27
Multiplying using a grid
You can use a multiplication grid to find out the answers to the sums.
To work out what 6 x 4 is on the grid. Find 6 along the top and 4 down the side. Where the column and row meet is the answer.

Multiplying by tens, hundreds and thousands
To times by ten you add a '0' from the 10 to the number your are multiplying it by to get the answer.
5 x 10 = 50
To times by one hundred you add two '0' from the 100 to the number you are multiplying it by to get the answer.
3 x 100 = 300
To times by one thousand you add three '0' from the 1000 to the number you are multiplying it by to get the answer.
6 x 1000 = 6000
You can now work out any sum which is multiplied by 10, 100 or 1000.
56 x 100 = 5600
Here you just at two '0' from the 100 to 56 to get the correct answer.
Multiplying by the grid method
To work out 45 x 5 break the 2-digit number up and multiply by them by the other number.
40 x 5 = 200
2 x 5 = 10
Add the answers together.
200 + 10 = 210
So
42 x 5 = 210
If you have a bigger numbers split them into a table to work out the answer. Try 52 x 13.
| x | 50 | 2 |
| 10 | 500 | 20 |
| 3 | 150 | 6 |
Now add the columns together
| x | 50 | 2 |
| 10 | 500 | 20 |
| 3 | 150 | 6 |
| 650 | 26 |
Now add up the two number in red.
650 + 26 = 676
So
52 x 13 = 676
