What is an angle?

An angle is how much something turns.

When you turn your body, open a door, or move the hands on a clock, you are making an angle!

Angles are all around us.

The corner of a book
The hands on a clock
A door opening

An angle is the amount of turn between two lines

Turns

Before we learn about degrees, we learn about turns.

Quarter turn

A quarter turn is a small turn.

It is like turning a corner.

Half turn

A half turn is a bigger turn.

You end up facing the opposite direction.

Three-quarter turn

A three-quarter turn is almost a full turn.

Full turn

A full turn brings you all the way back to where you started.

A full turn is a complete circle.

Right angles

Right anglesA right angle is a special angle.

  • It is exactly a quarter turn.
  • It is the same as 90° (ninety degrees)

Finding right angles

  1. Take an empty cereal box
  2. Cut off one corner. You now have a perfect right angle!
  3. How many right angles can you find around your house? Take a look at books, doors, windows, tables and tiles on the floor.

Clockwise & Anti-clockwise

When we turn, we can go in two directions:

  • Clockwise → the same way a clock moves
  • Anti-clockwise → the opposite way
