Pick a level

Try the spellings for your level. If you find they are too difficult, try the spellings for the year below. It's ok to work lower than the year you are on and fill the gaps in what you know rather than struggling at your level without understanding the basics.

Spelling in Reception

Spelling starts after the phonic sounds are learnt, and when your child is able to write the letters.

Play with magnetic letters on the fridge or sponge letters in the bath is a great way of getting your child to find out how the letter sounds go together to make words.

Learning spellings

The best way to remember your spellings is the look, say, cover, write, check method. Regually practicing this way will improve your spellings.

Practice your spellings for four days then get someone to test you on the fifth day without looking at the words first.

Spelling Matching Pairs Game

2 or more players

Download our spelling cards further down on this page.
Cut out all the cards.
Mix them up and lay them out face down.
Take it in turns to turn two cards over.
If the cards match, then add them to your pile and have another go.
If the cards don't match, turn them back over and the next player has a go.
When all the cards are matched, the player with the most pairs wins the game.

TIP: Download and mix the spelling cards to make the game harder.
